HOW WE STARTED......
Maya Hair Braiding started in Oklahoma with a young girl named Maya. My decision to start braiding in Oklahoma City came from a place of loneliness in my student life. It was a culture shock coming from Africa to a new land where the only person I knew was my dad. The only language understood was French, I couldn’t speak English at all. Blending in with the new culture has taken huge, dedicated, consistent effort.
Braiding has always been a passion and a means to express myself creatively. It was like the first proper language I could use to express myself in America.
Story of Maya Hair Braiding
It has been a wonderful and long journey for me. To gain more experience and understand the culture and the system better. I humble myself to learn from the more experienced people in braiding industry in the United States. I worked in different hair salons for free soaking up as much knowledge as I can. I stayed night and day braiding my sister’s and friend’s hair for free and I did this for years.
The last experience that really inspired me to start this business happened when I was in the state of Missouri for a month to take care of my Auntie’s shop with her workers. It took me 6 years having to work for different braiders, from one shop to the other for me to gain confidence and experience to get into my dream. They were all wonderful and beautiful memories.
In 2020, when the whole world was affected, and everywhere was closed, that’s when I made the decision to start this business and we hit the ground running. It has been the best decision I have ever made in my life.
It is a dream come through.
Then you start the business of your dream, a few days later or about a month later you discover it takes more than skills to run a business.
In my language we have a way to say it takes a whole village to raise a child. And I have seen that at work at Maya Hair Braiding.
Maya Hair Braiding is no longer a dream of a young girl alone (talented, determined, hard -working, goal-getter young lady, braiding since she was 16 years old, braiding with passion for over 9 years in Oklahoma City. The quality of her work, the finesse of her products speaks for itself, and she has gained a lot of experience over the years). it is now a team of wonderful dedicated, hardworking people gathered together and agreed in one goal which is to beautify ladies unapologetically, make them shine brighter to reveal God Goodness out there especially in Oklahoma and around the globe.
Definitively we are on our way to greater and better achievements, but we are Grateful for the Mighty Hand of God breathing fresh, renew wine into Maya Hair Braiding business so far.
